Remote Desktop troubleshooting

Someone asked me how he could make it happen that more than 2 users can connect to a server using remote desktop. Not that I know that much of all this but I did found out that when you perform a standard install of windows 2003 (and maybe other RDP supporting versions of windows) remote desktop is enabled in the standard mode. This means that there can only be 2 connections at the same time. You can use this to perform administrative tasks on the server.

Now if you want to allow more than 2 connections you will have to install the Terminal Services. When installing Terminal Services you will be asked to provide a Terminal Services License server. This means that it needs another server (can be the same machine) to use for the licenses, so you need to install that as well. During the installation of the Terminal Services License server you’ll be asked what type of licensing you want per device or per user.

So to connect you need a Client Access License!

That’s all I know about it. :-)

Logitech Alto, more than just a keyboard

Logitech has been releasing a lot of new and exiting products lately. I always use logitech for my keyboard and mouse needs. There is 1 product in particular I would like to mention. I don’t know how many of you use a portable. And for those that use a portable how many use a seperate keybaord and/or notebook stand? This is where the Logitech Alto comes in.

The Logitech Alto is a keyboard with a built-in notebook stand. This way you can use your  portable sort of like a desktop. The stand will bring up the portable and has got 3 extra USB ports that come in handy. Because of these 3 USB ports there is also a cabbling system that takes care of the clutter of cabbles. The stand is universal and should work with all portables up to 4,1 Kg. I’ ve also read that it comes with a Logitech wireless VX revelotion laser mouse, but I couldn’t find anything about that ok the website…

Windows Vista & Windows XP Responsiveness Test

I found a realy nice pdf on the web that showed the results of a responsiveness test between windows vista and windows xp. It provides detailed information about the tests that were done and also confirms that responsiveness between both the operating systems doesn’t differ that much as Microsoft would like us to believe. In fact even when there are differences they are small differences.

Check it out: http://principledtechnologies.com/clients/reports/Microsoft/VistaXPBusResp.pdf

Nice CAB article

In the .net magazine december 2006 edition there is an interesting article about programming with the Composite UI Application Block. This is the base block used by the Smart Client Software Factory of the Patterns & Practices team.

The artcile written by Jonne Kats explains very simple on how to start your first CAB enabled program. If you are interested in this technology and more important you are not afraid of a challenge you should realy have a look at the hands-on labs for Smart Client Software Factory.

If you want to read the article itself you can find it in the .net magazine for developers #15 december 2006 starting on page 42 (http://www.microsoft.com/netherlands/msdn/netmagazine/code/magazine15.aspx)

VM Workstation v6.0 Béta

VmWare has released their v6.0 béta. A lot of cool features like:

Support for Windows Vista – Use Windows Vista as host operating system
Multiple monitor display – You can configure a VM to span multiple monitors, or multiple VMs to each display on separate monitors
Automation APIs (VIX API 2.0) – You can write scripts and programs to automate VM testing
Headless mode – You can run VMs in the background without the Workstation UI

The feature that interests me is this one:

Integrated Virtual Debugger – Workstation integrates with Visual Studio and Eclipse so you can deploy, run, and debug programs in a VM directly from your preferred IDE

Does this really mean that in the future I can deploy my app to a VM running a certain config??? I really hope so this would be very very cool!

if you like to participate in the beta program you can do so here: http://www.vmware.com/products/beta/ws/

Newsgator & RSS freaks ;-)

I’ve been using newsgator’s online rss reader for a while now. Recently I upgraded my account to the premium account. The online webreader is really nice and also easy to use. I can follow all the feeds I’m tracking.

The beauty of newsgator really comes when you use it together with one of their other products. I’m currently testing FeedDemon 2.1. I really like the way it looks, but what I like most is the synchronization. When you update your feeds in the online version it’s synced to the FeedDemon application. I might be buying FeedDemon, but for now I’ll stick to the demo version.

They also have other products both for windows and Mac. Since I’m not into Mac I don’t know exactly what they have to offer for their users. On the other hand for the windows platform they have also 2 other products one for the mobile user and also a plugin for Microsoft’s Outlook application. Not that it’s necessary when you’re using the new 2007 version ;-)
